Spotlight on Micromachines – MDPI Blog

Today we’re taking an in-depth look at the journal Micromachines. This journal is an interesting place to read about micro/nano-scaled structures, materials, devices, and systems. Micromachines are useful in many different research fields, such as chemistry, engineering and technology, biology and biomedicine, and physics. Let’s take a moment to shine a spotlight on Micromachines.

Micromachines: a brief history

The inaugural issue of Micromachines was published in 2010 as a quarterly journal. With Prof. Miko Elwenspoek at the helm of the journal, it was indexed in EI Compendex—Engineering Village (Elsevier) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE)—Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics) in 2013.

Micromachines received its first Impact Factor in 2014 (1.286). Since then, it’s been on a consistent rise and in 2022 it was at 3.523.

In another promising year for the journal, 2018 saw indexing in PubMed—National Library of Medicine (NLM). Its 1000th paper was also published in 2018, and the first Best Paper Awards were held in the same year.

In 2020 and 2021, the journal established a number of new sections, including Engineering and Technology (2020), Biosensors (2021), Nanoparticles in Biomedicine (2021), Point-of-Care Devices (2021), Semiconductor Devices (2021), and 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing (2021). Then, in 2021, Micromachines published its 5000th paper.

Micromachines proudly held its first online conference in 2021. You can go to the Sciforum page now and see some of the presentations online!

Some words on Micromachines

As an open access journal, Micromachines continues to promote and publish innovative research across a number of fields for all to read. With its impact score steadily rising, the future looks promising. In line with its core aims, the journal invites both reviews and articles, including those on nanomaterials, sensors, and nanogenerators. This speaks to the journal’s commitment to progress. You can review the webpage to see whether your research is suited to the journal.

The journal’s Best Paper Award and Young Investigator Award also continue to encourage innovative research. The awards recognize creativity in design, originality and scientific merit and impact. You can take a look at the Micromachines page for more information on open awards, such as its Young Investigator Award.

Want to learn more?

Micromachines is a truly fascinating and multi-field journal. It has acted as an excellent publishing outlet for innovative research over the years. And the future of the journal is bright.

You can find out more by taking a look at the Micromachines journal webpage, or contacting the Editorial Office. Importantly, the team is always ready to answer questions and queries from authors and potential authors alike.

Thinking of submitting your manuscript to Micromachines?

You should submit your manuscript online at susy.mdpi.com. The submitting author is generally the corresponding author and is responsible for the manuscript during the submission and peer-review process. In order to submit your manuscript, register and log in to the submission website. All co-authors can see the manuscript details using the system. To do so, they must register and log in with the same e-mail address used for manuscript submission.

Successes and what’s next

Micromachines continues to make waves in the field. It is dedicated to promoting innovative research and is involved in the 2023 6th International Conference on Electronics Technology (ICET). The conference is held annually in Chengdu, China, bringing together important findings from across multiple fields. Publications in the journal’s Special Issues will be promoted here.

In future, Micromachines will continue to work within the scope of the journal. Given its multi-field perspective, there is space for many new researchers to publish across Special Issues too. For more information on its history, awards, and conferences, take a look at the Micromachines website.
